Olive Bee-eater
Merops superciliosus

First reported on 23 July 2002 from Ebenhauser on the lower Olifants River north of Lambert's Bay in the Western Cape. Three birds were present including one fine adult and 2 sub-adult birds. It would appear as if these birds are of the Angolan race M. s. alternans which is normally only encountered within the Southern African subregion along the Cunene River in Northern Namibia. This would constitute the first record of this race for South Africa and has already caused quite some excitement amongst local birders. These video grabs were taken on 17 August 2002.
